Split from a cruise ship: making the most of your day ashore
Only a few hours in Split? Ideas for the city, Trogir or Klis and how to get back to the ship on time.
Updated:
Cruise ships calling at Split drop passengers almost at the doors of the old town. That is a big advantage, but it is also why the palace streets are at their busiest around noon. With a little planning, a few hours ashore can show you much more.
If you have up to three hours
Stay in town. Walk along the Riva, through the palace cellars to the Peristyle, climb the cathedral bell tower and leave through the Golden Gate. If you have time left, a short walk to the first viewpoint on Marjan rewards you with a view of the harbour and your ship.
If you have five to six hours
- Trogir: a UNESCO-listed old town, about 35 minutes’ drive.
- Klis and Salona: a fortress with a view and Roman ruins, about twenty minutes from the port.
- Or combine: a short palace tour, then one of these destinations.
Getting back on time
The golden rule is to leave a margin. In summer traffic towards the port and from Kaštela can be slow, so plan to return at least an hour before final boarding. Save the ship’s departure time and berth details.
A taxi for a short stay
When time is short, a taxi saves hours: no waiting for buses or searching for stops. Send us your ship’s arrival and departure times and we will suggest a schedule and meet you at the port. Send us a request.
