Omiš and the Cetina canyon: adventure half an hour from Split

A small town at the mouth of a river, fortresses above the rooftops and rafting through the canyon. A trip idea close to Split.

Updated:

Omiš sits where the Cetina river leaves a narrow canyon and meets the sea. The steep cliffs above the town, the old centre and the beach right at the river mouth make it one of the most interesting places between Split and Makarska.

What to see and do

  • The old town with narrow streets and squares, ideal for a short stroll.
  • Mirabela Fortress above the rooftops, with views of the river mouth and the sea.
  • The Cetina canyon, where rafting, canoeing and other river trips are organised.
  • The town beach by the river mouth, with sand and pebbles.

For active visitors

The Cetina canyon is popular for rafting, canyoning and ziplining. These activities are run by local agencies, so book ahead, especially in summer, and check the meeting point.

Getting there

Omiš is about half an hour’s drive from Split along the coast road heading south, depending on traffic. The same road continues to Makarska, so Omiš fits easily into a drive to the riviera.

A taxi can take you right to the rafting meeting point or the old town, and pick you up afterwards, wet and tired, without any worries about parking. Send us a request with the time and number of passengers, or see the Split – Makarska route.
