When to visit Split: seasons, crowds and traffic through the year
July and August, the shoulder season or winter: what Split is like at different times of year and what it means for your trip.
Updated:
Split is open all year, but the same city looks very different in August and in November. When to come depends on whether you want the sea and lively streets or quieter walks and easier getting around.
Summer: July and August
The hottest and liveliest time. The sea is warm, terraces are full and ferries and catamarans run most often. On the other hand, the old town is packed, accommodation prices are at their highest and traffic to the airport, through Kaštela and around the ferry port can be very slow. If you come then, book ahead and expect longer journeys.
Spring and autumn shoulder season
May, June, September and October are many people’s favourite. The sea is often warm enough for swimming, especially in September, crowds are smaller, and trips to Krka, Trogir or the islands are more pleasant without the summer heat.
Winter
From November to March Split is a calm city where locals live. Many restaurants stay open, the Riva is sunny and the museums and the palace are crowd-free. Ferry lines run less often, so check the timetable if you plan to visit the islands.
Traffic tips
- In summer leave for the airport with extra time.
- Fridays and Saturdays in season are the busiest days because of guest changeovers.
- For summer day trips, set off early in the morning.
